Why can’t I modify my GTT order in F&O?
You may not be able to modify your GTT (Good Till Triggered) order because it has already been triggered, converted into a regular limit order, or due to certain reasons mentioned below. Once a GTT is triggered, it no longer remains a GTT order and therefore cannot be modified as one.
Although you can modify the GTT from your order book once its triggered.
Common Reasons Why GTT Order Cannot Be Modified
1) GTT Order Has Already Been Triggered
This is the most common reason.
- Once the trigger price is hit, the GTT order is sent to the exchange as a normal limit order.
- After this, the order cannot be modified from the GTT section.
Example (F&O):
-
You placed a GTT to buy NIFTY 22,500 CE
- Trigger price: ₹100
- Limit price: ₹102
-
The option price hits ₹100, so the GTT gets triggered.
-
Now the order appears as a pending limit order in the order book.
-
At this stage, you cannot modify it as a GTT order as it becomes the normal order now.
You must cancel the pending limit order and place a new GTT request if required.
2) Trying to Modify the Other “Leg” in OCO GTT
In a GTT OCO (One Cancels Other) order:
- Once the entry order is triggered, then second leg will get cancelled.
- The entry leg cannot be changed or removed after it is triggered.
Example:
- You bought BANK NIFTY Futures using GTT OCO.
- Entry order is triggered.
- You try to modify the entry price again which is not allowed
3) Insufficient Funds or Holdings
- If you increase the quantity or price of a buy GTT order but do not have enough funds, the modification will fail.
- For sell GTT orders, you must have enough qty available.
Example:
- If you try to increase the quantity in a GTT buy order for options contract and if the required margin is higher than the available funds, the modification request will get rejected.
4) Corporate Actions
- Events like bonus, split, dividend, or demerger in the underlying stock will lead to automatic cancellation of GTT requests.
- In such cases, the GTT order cannot be modified and must be placed again.
